Forester or Forestry Technician
Position Summary
The Forester or Forestry Technician may work independently or with a team in managing, conserving, and harvesting forests.
This employee will coordinate and work closely with contractors during loading/unloading of forest products or machinery.
The Forester or Tech is responsible for the safe and efficient transport of wood products and the machinery used to manage various forest sites.
Either position requires adherence and knowledge of LA BMP and guidelines; as well as SFI tree farm requirements.
The Forester position requires a four-year degree in Forestry and is a springboard for further advancement within the Forestry Division.
The Technician requires either sufficient, previous forestry experience, or a two-year degree; and is considered a growth position for those who may want to further their education.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Oversee Logging Operation
• One call
• Road permits
• Acquisition of necessary tickets
• Flag lines
• Maximize product utilization
• Oversee the implementation of Louisiana BMP's
• Report to supervisor about the current status of logging operations
• Communicate with Land Management when cutting on company land
• Identify drainage, safety hazards, soil conditions and dangerous work environments
• Ability to read and interpret documents, instructions and guidelines
Inspection of perspective timber sales
• Log ability

Knowledge and Skills
• Cruise potential timber sales
• Assist in the growth of new delivered contractors
• Assist in tract pricing
• Experience with Hardwood and Pine inventory techniques, including navigating by map,
compass, and GPS
• Familiarity with regional tree species
• Excellent problem-solving and multitasking skills
• Familiar with Microsoft Office/Excel

Education and/or Experience
• Four-year Forestry Degree required for Forester position
• An Associate degree in Forestry, or equivalent work experience is required for the Technician position.
Physical Requirements
• Specific vision and hearing capabilities related to the inspection of species of wood, depth perception, distance, color, peripheral, hearing/seeing signals, markings and instructions
• Regularly lift up to 50 lbs unassisted; and on occasion lift up to 100 lbs unassisted
• Frequent use of full range of motion to include: walk/hike on uneven surfaces, stand for long periods of time, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, drive, computer work
• Clear communication both in person and over electronic devices
• Safely operate vehicles and some equipment
